The Western Australia Electric Vehicle (EV) Network has reached a significant milestone, marking the halfway point in its plan to install 49 fast charging sites across the state with the recent opening of Synergy’s Jerramungup EV fast charging site.
The charging site, which is the 26th in the network, signals a major step forward in enhancing EV infrastructure throughout Western Australia, the government said in a media statement.
Designed to facilitate convenient and efficient travel for electric vehicle owners, the WA EV Network strategically places charging stations less than 200 kilometres apart along key travel routes.
The 150kW Jerramungup charger, located along the southern coastline, links Albany to Esperance and enables EV drivers to recharge their vehicles in approximately 20 minutes.
With 26 sites now operational, the WA EV Network is poised to cover an extensive 7,000-kilometer stretch, extending from Kununurra in the north to Esperance along the southwest coast and east to Kalgoorlie and Eucla.
Energy Minister Reece Whitby expressed that the WA Government takes pride in investing in one of the longest electric vehicle charging networks globally.
He mentioned that the WA EV Network serves as the backbone of EV charging infrastructure, which is essential for driving the ongoing adoption of EVs across WA.
“These charging stations are now in 25 locations, making it is easier for EV drivers to explore our wonderful State, while reducing their travel time and range anxiety,” the minister noted.
Recent additions to the network include EV fast chargers in Warmun, Derby, Halls Creek, Norseman, and Hamelin Pool.
Construction is already underway for upcoming locations at Billabong, Minilya, Kalgoorlie, Kojonup, Brookton, Ravensthorpe, and Bunbury.
Since the first charger went live in Geraldton in April 2023, the WA EV Network has seen more than 5,500 charging sessions, emphasizing the growing adoption and demand for electric vehicles in the region.
The completion of the WA EV Network, scheduled for mid-2024, aligns with the WA Government’s commitment to invest $43.5 million in EV infrastructure.
The initiative aims to bolster the uptake of electric vehicles, contributing to the state’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
