Residents of Warialda have the opportunity to start the new year with an environmentally friendly resolution by recycling drink containers at the IGA Warialda Return and Earn machine.

The initiative offers a 10-cent refund for every eligible bottle, can, or carton returned, contributing to both individual savings and local sustainability efforts.

“Whether you’re saving for something special or supporting a cause close to your heart, it is an easy way to contribute to the Warialda community and help the environment. And with the rising cost of living, recycling through Return and Earn is a simple way to earn a little extra cash,” said James Dorney, CEO of TOMRA Cleanaway, the network operator for Return and Earn.

The machine features dedicated chutes for lightweight and glass containers, streamlining the recycling process for users.

Since the scheme began, Gwydir Council residents have returned over 12 million eligible drink containers through local return points.

“The IGA Warialda Return and Earn machine alone has processed over 3.9 million containers, a great effort by the local community,” Dorney added.

Located in the car park at 26 Stephen Street, the IGA Warialda Return and Earn machine operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Participants can choose to redeem their refunds through a printed voucher for cash or purchases at the IGA, or opt for an e-voucher or direct payment via the Return and Earn app.

Residents also have the option to donate their refunds to charitable causes.

More than 300 donation partners are listed on the Return and Earn app, including the Salvation Army, which provides financial assistance to families in need, and Foodbank NSW & ACT, a food relief charity supporting individuals across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

Return and Earn has become a valuable fundraising channel for charities and community groups, with over $72 million raised through donations and hosting fees since its inception in 2017.

The program has facilitated the return of more than 13 billion drink containers for recycling, generating over $1.3 billion in refunds.
