The Western Australian government is seeking public feedback on its Renewable Hydrogen Strategy.
The strategy serves as a roadmap that would support the growth of the state’s hydrogen industry and stimulate local demand for hydrogen by developing the local industry within the energy, industry, and transport sectors.
The McGowan government is calling on stakeholders for insights on the potential design of a Renewable Hydrogen Target for electricity generation in the South West Interconnected System, WA’s main electricity.
“A Renewable Hydrogen Target for electricity generation on the South West Interconnected System is important to stimulating demand and getting renewable hydrogen generation projects kick-started,” said Hydrogen Industry Minister Alannah MacTiernan.
As part of the strategy, electricity retailers would be mandated to purchase a designated percentage of hydrogen energy, creating a local market that would support emerging hydrogen projects and improve grid stability.
“Western Australia has the renewable energy resources and skills to become a world-leading renewable hydrogen producer,” MacTiernan said.
“Work is continuing on a broader renewable hydrogen certificate scheme which will provide a broader range of opportunities for local producers. This first piece of the Renewable Hydrogen Target represents an opportunity to get an early start on-demand stimulation.”
Stakeholder input will be crucial to maximising the benefits to the state and supporting the long-term growth of a local renewable hydrogen industry, the WA government said in its statement.
“The McGowan Government is committed to developing Western Australia’s hydrogen industry and supporting our plans for a low carbon future,” said Energy Minister Bill Johnston.
“Public consultation is important in ensuring the design of the Renewable Hydrogen Target for electricity generation is fit-for-purpose,” the energy minister noted.
“This is a great opportunity for all interested stakeholders to have their say and assist in creating demand for hydrogen.”
Responses to the solicitation will be accepted until 10 November at 5pm (AWST).
