The Western Australian Government has launched an expressions of interest (EOI) process aimed at securing the Pilbara’s clean energy future.
The initiative seeks proponents to build the necessary transmission infrastructure that will help decarbonise Western Australia’s economic hub while minimising on-Country impacts, the government said in a media release.
Successful applicants will be granted Priority Project status, enabling them to benefit from State Government facilitation.
Additionally, they will receive the State’s endorsement to negotiate funding through the Commonwealth Government’s $3 billion Rewiring the Nation fund, administered by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.
Energy Minister Reece Whitby highlighted the significance of the project for the region’s future.
“Through the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan we are driving the region’s decarbonisation in a way that supports existing industry, unlocks new business and job opportunities, and minimises impact on Country.
The EOI process invites proposals to develop transmission infrastructure in four key corridors:
- The Burrup (Murujuga) Corridor, linking the Maitland Strategic Industrial Area (SIA) with Karratha and the Burrup SIA;
- The Chichester Range Corridor, connecting the Maitland SIA with a nearby high-quality wind zone;
- The Hamersley Range Corridor, linking the Boodarie SIA and Port Hedland to the Hamersley Range;
- The Great Sandy Desert Corridor, connecting Boodarie SIA and Port Hedland with renewable projects near the Great Sandy Desert.
These developments build on previous plans to create a high-capacity transmission line connecting renewable energy generation from the Maitland SIA with major Pilbara industrial players.
“This is a world-class infrastructure investment opportunity that will play a pivotal role in global decarbonisation,” added Minister Whitby.
He added, “The Pilbara will be a clean energy powerhouse, with potential to amplify the economic success of our mining industry, and I encourage all interested parties to engage in this generational opportunity.”
The EOI process is a cornerstone of the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan, designed to accelerate decarbonisation and meet growing energy demands by fostering the development of common-use infrastructure in the region.
Applications for the EOI close on 25 October, with recommendations expected by the end of 2024.
Minister Assisting the State and Industry Development, Jobs and Trade Minister Stephen Dawson echoed Whitby’s optimism.
“This is another exciting project being undertaken by the Cook Government to support decarbonising the Pilbara. This EOI process is an important step to ensure WA’s economic heartland has the necessary infrastructure required to decarbonise industry and support our region’s ambition of becoming a clean energy superpower.”
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel also expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “I am excited about this new EOI process for priority transmission projects in the Pilbara. This is another step in our journey to cleaner energy and will support existing industries while creating new opportunities.”
