The Western Australian government has announced a $1 million investment for the expansion of the Westrac Technology Training Centre (WTTC).

Made possible through the Collie Futures Industry Development Fund, the investment seeks to support the next stages of growth for the cutting-edge Collie facility, which develops new training solutions for resources and civil construction industries.

As part of the project, two additional buildings will be built, which will house theory and virtual reality training rooms, reception, administration, and a multipurpose room.

The funding will also be used to purchase a new plant and machinery and enhance communications infrastructure.

“We know that investing in skills and training – in partnership with industry – is one of the best ways we can set Collie up for the future,” said Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery.

According to a media statement issued by the WA government, the expansion will open new courses and apprenticeship pathways for local students and transitioning workers and support the McGowan government’s $662 million investment in Collie’s transition.

“We’re continuing to build on Collie’s historical strengths as an industrial hub – transitioning the local economy to support new jobs and opportunities, and setting up the town for the long term,” said Premier Mark McGowan.

“The WesTrac Technology Training Centre is part of Collie’s future – putting the town on the map as a national centre of excellence for autonomous equipment training, with ongoing benefits to WA industry and the community.”

Being the second of its type in the world, WTTC opened in August 2020 to foster the technical skills needed to operate autonomous equipment, with a focus on Caterpillar mine haulage vehicles.

The centre has provided training to over 350 people since its inception.
