Visy has announced the launch of a new product, Visycell, aimed at providing a sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS), a material widely known for its environmental impact.

The new product, currently undergoing trials with food delivery businesses, is a fibre-based thermal insulation liner that offers the same strong thermal and cushioning qualities as EPS, but with the added benefit of being fully recyclable through kerbside bins.

Visycell is manufactured in Melbourne’s west using cardboard waste offcuts, specifically designed to address the challenges posed by Australia’s hot climate.

It helps keep temperature-sensitive food and beverages safe and fresh during transport, the company said in a news release.

“We’re working hard to help customers ditch problematic polystyrene and we’re pleased to be trialing Visycell as a new alternative,” said Rolland Zhang, New Business Projects Manager at Visy.

“We think food and beverage customers will love Visycell—it will keep their product safe and fresh during transportation, is easily recycled, and is locally made.”

Zhang emphasised that Visycell has potential beyond the food and beverage industry. It could also be used to transport fragile goods and in building construction.

The insulation has passed rigorous testing to ensure it meets high standards, and it can be flat-packed, which provides additional cost savings for businesses.

Visycell has received certification from the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) for recyclability and can bear the Australasian Recycling Logo (ARL).

According to APCO, less than 20% of EPS in Australia is recycled, and Visycell could replace the equivalent of over 170 Olympic swimming pools worth of EPS annually.

Visy said this would significantly reduce the amount of EPS waste being sent to landfills or contributing to environmental pollution.

For businesses interested in adopting Visycell, Visy invites them to contact the company for an opportunity to be among the first to use the new product.
