Visy, Australia’s largest integrated recycler and remanufacturer, has reached a significant milestone by achieving an average of 63 per cent recycled glass in its packaging across Australia and New Zealand for the current financial year.

This achievement marks a five per cent increase compared to the previous financial year of 2023, the company said in a news release.

Across Visy’s operations, the figure is even higher for recycled coloured glass (amber and green), standing at an average of 75 per cent for the current financial year.

According to Kate Baker, Visy’s general manager of Sustainability, this increase in recycled glass translates to less landfill usage and reduced energy consumption.

A Visy glass container with 70% recycled content uses up to 30% less energy to make than a container with no recycled content,” Baker explained.

Paul Vine, general manager of Visy Glass, underscored the company’s commitment to working with customers to further enhance the utilisation of recycled glass in packaging.

“We’re getting up to 90% recycled glass into some of our green and amber bottles, creating a more sustainable product, keeping glass out of landfill and reducing our reliance on virgin material,” Vine stated.

Visy said its ongoing investments, such as the recent $50 million upgrade at the Laverton glass recycling facility, are driving the company closer to its target of an average of 70 per cent recycled glass in bottles and jars across Australia and New Zealand.

Furthermore, with investments underway in New South Wales and Queensland, including the development of a $500 million glass recycling and manufacturing facility in Yatala, south of Brisbane, Visy said it is poised to escalate the recycled content in glass containers over the coming years.
