The Andrews Labor Government funding will fast-track the development of regional and rural recycling infrastructure while creating jobs in Regional Victoria.
Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosia announced today a $20 million funding support to expedite the development of a four-bin recycling system in Regional Victoria.
The proposed four service system will separate household waste into rubbish, recycling, glass and green waste.
“We are revolutionising recycling across Victoria,” said Minister D’Ambrosio.
“By separating household waste into four categories, we’re making the most of the material and making sure we reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill.”
With the funding, the councils will upgrade recycling transfer stations and drop-off points, particularly for separated glass and organics, while works on the new four stream household waste recycling service across the state are ongoing.
“Our recycling reforms mean that every household can do their bit reducing waste and making sure that recycling is a part of daily life,” the Minister added.
“This funding recognises that there isn’t a one-size fits all recycling solution for rural and regional council across Victoria.”
Aside from managing waste that travels to metro Melbourne from the local communities, the system will also help keep and create new jobs.
“This funding puts the needs of rural and regional communities at the forefront of statewide reforms to our recycling system and will stimulate local economies and create jobs,” the release said.
The four stream recycling project is a key initiative of Recycling Victoria – A New Economy, the State Governments plan to transform the waste and recycling system through better household recycling, improved infrastructure, and stronger industry regulation.
So far, the Labor Government has invested $15 million to the plan, which also aims to improve local processing capacity and remanufacturing.
