The federal government has begun accepting applications for the Regional Hydrogen Hubs Program – Townsville Region Grant opportunity, which seeks to create a Hydrogen Hub to deliver clean energy.
The grant program is part of the government’s Powering Australia Plan, which is aimed at boosting the production of hydrogen to help reduce Australia’s emissions by 43 per cent by 2030.
As part of the grant program, eligible organisations will receive matched grant funding ranging from $30 million to $70 million for projects that seek to develop and implement clean hydrogen projects in the Townsville region.
The investment is intended to support the development of Australia’s green hydrogen industry, assisting Australia to achieve its emissions reduction goals while continuing to grow local industries and support the transition to low-cost green energy.
The grant program intends to make green hydrogen available for domestic and export use, establish domestic green hydrogen supply chains, and foster the existing industry’s use of green hydrogen in the region.
In a notice, the federal government said applications for the grant will be vetted in two stages. Organisations will first submit an expression of interest at Stage 1. Once shortlisted, they will then be invited to submit grant applications at the second stage.
Organisations can apply for the grant program if they have an Australian business number and evidence that the company can complete the project and meet the costs not covered by funding.
The eligible entity must also partner with at least one other organisation of the program, but applicants with multiple project partners are preferred.
