Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has announced the opening of applications for its 2025 Market Development Fund, aimed at supporting Australian businesses, researchers, and organisations in delivering innovative projects that incorporate tyre-derived materials (TDM).
The Fund is designed to help advance Australia’s transition to a circular tyre economy by addressing the environmental, health, and safety impacts associated with end-of-life tyres, TSA said in a news release.
The Market Development Fund has been a significant part of TSA’s strategy to foster commercially viable markets for TDM.
Since its launch, the Fund has contributed over $10 million to more than 70 projects in sectors such as infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and research.
This continued investment underscores TSA’s commitment to supporting initiatives that bring practical, real-world solutions to market.
Applications for the Fund are open to organisations operating in various fields, including infrastructure, manufacturing, product development, research, and government.
The key requirement is that projects must use TDM sourced from end-of-life tyres processed in Australia and align with TSA’s specific guidelines.
TSA typically offers funding amounts ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 (excluding GST), with the potential for higher or lower amounts based on the expected impact of the proposal.
Past recipients of the Fund have included notable projects such as sun-smart UV-resistant roads developed by RMIT University, rubber T-Lok barriers produced by Saferoads in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, and noise-reducing acoustic walls created by Flexiroc and UNSW.
Other successful projects include permeable pavements designed to reduce stormwater runoff, as well as rubber sports and playground surfacing manufactured by A1 Rubber.
Expressions of Interest are now being accepted, with applications due by 9 May 2025 to be considered in the next review cycle.
