Metal additive manufacturing company Titomic has received a $400,000 CoBRAIN grant as part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe initiative.

The ASX-listed manufacturing company will use the funding to research and develop artificial intelligence and machine learning-based solutions within the area of cold spray applications.

The initiative’s outcomes are expected to optimise cold spray processes for manufacturing with new and existing materials and metals, Titomic said in its announcement Monday

The grant funding will also assist Titomic in undertaking R&D to further boost the company’s competitive edge. The first tranche of funding is expected to be received in fiscal year 2023.

The CoBRAIN program is aimed at developing novel hard metals for corrosion and wear resistance and validating an integrated computational-experimental material engineering workflow.

“CoBRAIN brings together the brightest minds in the field of metal protection. With Titomic Europe’s extensive experience in low and medium-pressure cold spray technology solutions, and proven wear resistance and corrosion protection capability, our involvement provides strong validation of Titomic’s cold spray reputation and capability in Europe and around the world,” said Herbert Koeck, managing director of Titomic.

Horizon Europe, the largest EU research program, seeks to meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, address climate change, and increase the 27-nation bloc’s growth and competitiveness.

“The grant builds on Titomic Europe’s success to date in glass mould coatings, with our automated cold spray solutions commercially adopted by the IPGR network. We look forward to developing novel adjacent applications with the support of CoBRAIN.” Koeck said.

The CoBRAIN grant comes after the success Titomic had with the International Partners in Glass Research network, where the company developed and sold a system for the coating of glass moulds.

The system is a breakthrough in automated cold spray for using AI to boost productivity and mitigate operating costs.
