According to the press release by Thales, the Innovation Hub in Hong Kong will focus on the concept of Smart Cities, working specifically in the transport and security domains. In transportation, the Hub will support projects in the areas of urban transport data analysis, decision support and the optimisation of operations, whereas in security it will principally focus on intelligent surveillance systems.

The teams will work on fusing real-time and historical video data with information from monitoring systems, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of security operations.

The partnership with HKUST — which was signed in the presence of Jean-Luc Lambla, VP International Chief Technical Officer of Thales, and Dr Eden Woon, VP for Institutional Advancement of HKUST — will foster innovation in the development of future products through the collaboration of students and engineers from Thales and researchers from the Hong Kong University.

“It is our great pleasure to have established a strategic partnership with the renowned innovation leader Thales. HKUST has been delivering remarkable achievements in innovation research.  Driven by the synergy created from the collaboration, we believe such new momentum will definitely help our city and the region as a whole to become a science and technology hub in the foreseeable future,” said Dr Eden Woon, VP for Institutional Advancement of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

“Within a short span of 23 years, HKUST has developed into a dynamic, world-class university powered by the dedicated efforts of its outstanding faculty members, staff and students.  Together, we can translate breakthroughs into novel technologies and solutions, groom talents, and create employment opportunities.”
