The Australian Aluminium Council has reiterated its demand for the inclusion of bauxite, alumina, and aluminium on Australia’s Critical Minerals list, following a new report that outlines escalating risks to the sector.

The Economic Contribution of the Vertically Integrated Australian Aluminium Industry report, commissioned by the Australian Aluminium Council, has outlined how the sector—one of the few globally with a complete mine-to-market supply chain—generates more than AUD 18 billion annually and provides over 20,700 direct and 55,000 indirect jobs. 

Australia has officially recognised the critical importance of aluminium in the global transition to a net-zero future by including it in the newly unveiled Strategic Materials List.

A recent study conducted by the International Aluminium Institute has unveiled that the majority of aluminium cans recycled by Australians are reintroduced into the manufacturing process to create a new generation of aluminium cans, closing the can-to-can recycling loop.

The Australian Aluminium Council has backed a new aluminium decarbonisation strategy developed by the Mission Possible Partnership and the International Aluminium Institute.
