STEPS Pathways Charity has intensified its recycling efforts through a renewed partnership with Strong Street Recyclers, supporting the Queensland-wide Containers for Change initiative.

The initiative provides multiple ways for staff, participants, and the wider community to contribute to a simple yet impactful recycling effort, STEPS said in a news release.

Under the program, every eligible container recycled using STEPS Pathways Charity’s member number (#C11450072) directly benefits young adults with disabilities and autism by helping them develop the skills and confidence needed for independent living.

With the cost of attending STEPS Pathways College reaching up to $35,000 per student annually, each bottle and can collected brings the organisation closer to its goal of empowering young adults with disabilities.

Katrina May, manager of STEPS Pathways Charity, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative’s dual impact.

“It’s a win-win situation. We get to recycle and reduce landfill, and the recycling we do goes towards putting our STEPS Pathways College students on a path to independence. I am so excited by this opportunity because for little effort, it contributes to such massive outcomes for both our climate and our students.”

To make participation as easy as possible, special recycling bins provided by Strong Street Recyclers have been placed at STEPS Pathways Charity’s Caloundra campuses on George Street and Bulcock Street.

Staff and students are encouraged to drop off their eligible containers, while households can collect containers and deposit them at the George Street bins or any Containers for Change depot using the charity’s member number.

For those unable to travel to a depot or bin, STEPS Pathways Charity offers a free collection service in select suburbs, enabling individuals to arrange for recyclables to be picked up from their homes.

Businesses, cafes, sporting clubs, and apartment complexes interested in contributing are also encouraged to get involved by coordinating collection efforts with the charity.

Eligible containers include most aluminium cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles, though some items do not qualify.

A comprehensive list of eligible containers can be found on the Containers for Change website.
