The Australian Government has announced a $25 million investment under the National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) to boost South Australia’s satellite manufacturing capabilities, targeting improved connectivity for some of Australia’s most remote regions.
Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic hailed the investment in Myriota, a South Australian satellite telecommunications company, as a pivotal step towards strengthening the nation’s manufacturing capabilities.
“The National Reconstruction Fund is backing Aussie know-how to help manufacture critical technologies in this country,” Minister Husic said.
“South Australia is helping the country to not only rebuild its manufacturing muscle but sharpen its edge with new technologies and industries like what we’re seeing at Myriota.”
Founded in 2015, Myriota specialises in remote sensing technologies that enable real-time monitoring and management of assets in areas lacking traditional internet coverage. From aiding farmers in tracking water and fuel levels to enhancing fault detection in wind farms and providing defence forces with real-time asset visibility, Myriota’s innovations have broad applications.
The $25 million investment is set to create 100 highly skilled jobs in South Australia, including roles in engineering, software development, and satellite communications.
Additionally, it will expand Myriota’s network technologies and infrastructure, while scaling the manufacturing of satellite communications modules and hardware for export.
“This investment will ensure our advanced manufacturing stays here in Australia, helping to diversify the Australian economy while delivering up to 100 highly skilled jobs with the opportunity and expertise to drive global impact,” said Myriota CEO Ben Cade.
The NRF is focused on investing in projects across seven priority areas to bolster Australian manufacturing, grow the skilled workforce, and diversify the economy.
Myriota’s satellite technology exemplifies the Fund’s goal of enabling capabilities that bring tangible benefits to regional Australia.
“By investing in companies such as Myriota, the NRFC is helping to commercialise Australian innovation that directly translates into high-skilled jobs and creates significant benefits for regional Australians,” said Martijn Wilder AM, Chair of the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC).
Minister Husic underscored the importance of supporting technologies that enhance connectivity in Australia’s vast and remote regions.
“In a country as vast and remote as ours, communications and connectivity are absolutely crucial. Backing investments like this is pivotal to achieving that.”
