Singaporean infrastructure giant Keppel has partnered with Incitec Pivot to explore the feasibility of building a green ammonia production facility in Gladstone, Queensland.

The Singaporean company signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday, 26 May, with Incitec to launch the Central Queensland Hydrogen Project (CQ-H2).

The project is part of the Queensland government’s new-industry development strategy, the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund, and the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan

The two companies will work closely with the Queensland government to explore all essential infrastructure licenses and approval.

“Through Keppel’s involvement in the CQ-H2 consortium, and our partnership with Incitec Pivot, we are redoubling our efforts in making green hydrogen and ammonia reliable and commercially viable energy sources,” said Keppel Infrastructure Division CEO Cindy Lim.

“Keppel’s strong track record in developing and operating large-scale energy and environmental infrastructure combined with the expertise and experience of our esteemed partners will enable us to produce, store and transport green hydrogen and ammonia in a safe, scalable and cost-competitive manner for end-users in Australia, Singapore and globally,” Lim added.

“This innovative international partnership with Keppel is one of several decarbonisation projects we are progressing as part of our Ambition to be Net Zero by 2050,” according to Jeanne Johns, managing director at Incitec Pivot.

CQ-H2 is the largest green hydrogen project in the country and ranks top 10 globally at the pre-Final Investment Decision stage.

Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick discussed the project with Keppel executives during his trade mission to Singapore in September 2022. He also met with Keppel Infrastructure Division CEO Lim in March this year.

“Global demand for renewable hydrogen is accelerating to support energy transition and domestic energy security,” Minister Dick said.

“After a number of discussions with Keppel, we are delighted the company and Incitec Pivot, have chosen Gladstone for their green ammonia production facility. This will open exciting and significant export possibilities, let alone regional jobs,” he added.
