Safran Electronics & Defence Australasia is supplying more than 100 units of JIM Compact multispectral surveillance devices for the Australian Defence Force’s LAND 159 Tranche 1 ADF sniper system.
The delivery is part of Safran’s contract with NIOA, a 100 per cent Australian-owned company and primary contractor for Tranche 1 of LAND 159 program.
The JIM Compact binocular, which is designed to serve as a critical element of military operations and real-time tactical information, was selected to enhance sniper system surveillance, accuracy and performance in a wide range of environments.
In a press release, Safran said its JIM Compact unit stands out for its compactness, robustness, autonomy, and intuitive ergonomics designed for day and night contact operations.
Weighing less than 2 kg including the batter, the JIM Compact surveillance device includes a cooled thermal detector designed for extended ranges HD channel, laser rangefinder, advanced image processing, and capability to send data and video to other sniper devices.

This latest contract with NIOA expands the footprint of the JIM Compact in Australia, with more than 250 units already delivered to the Australian Joint Fires Observers, Joint Terminal Attack Controller, and Special Forces under the LAND 17 Phase 2 contract.
