The improvements will involve renewing track, overhead cranes, digging pits to get access below the trains, a new workshop, testing facilities, and a storage facility.
Victorian Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said a minimum 60% local content quota has also been put in place to ensure that local jobs are maximized, with at least 5% of trainee and apprenticeship positions to be included in the project.
“It’s exciting to see this significant project getting underway – delivering hundreds of jobs and improving accessibility on our transport network,” the Minister stated.
“We’re proud to be building trains in Victoria, for Victoria, and this is another important project that supports advanced manufacturing in our state.”
