Welcome to the Feature Series for Australian Manufacturing, where each month we will shine the focus on one particular Australian manufacturer and breakdown what really gives them the competitive advantage, in an otherwise difficult sector.

If you missed last weeks story, this month we are focusing on CMP Controls, an Australian-based manufacturer of lighting control gear. This week, we take a look at how CMP Controls employs a strict quality program in order to ensure customer satisfaction is always met.

We all know too well the downward slope many manufacturers have been facing in recent years. The high Australia Dollar, Carbon Tax, lack of anti-dumping laws, the high cost of production and the list goes on and on. But what keeps an Australian manufacturer competitive when it’s a game of price is right? Quality.

CMP Controls believes when dealing with such a delicate subject matter, in this case electricity, quality needs to be at the forefront of the manufacturing process. CMP Controls ballasts are a premium product. All products are 100% Australian Made and when dealing with lighting and electrical this actually makes a big difference.

CMP Controls is certified by SAI Global’s ISO 9001 and management strongly believes in regular training, to ensure quality is never compromised. The company adheres to strict Quality Procedures and each station is equipped with test stations. Most of the employees have decades of experience at the plant, with a strong understanding of both the products and the quality procedures inside out.  Where other low cost countries have been known for their high turnover of staff, the production environment at CMP Controls is filled with countless years of combined experience manufacturing the same products, for over 35 years.

Although price does play a factor in some markets, other markets, such as the Middle East, are purely concerned about the quality and longevity of the ballast and transformer. According to management, quality is something that customers just expect from an Australian made product and it’s something CMP prides itself on delivering.

The products, which mainly consist of copper, plastic and metal objects, all need to adhere to the strictest of quality standards, and everything from the assembly of the product, through to the packaging and warehousing, all has to be systematically measured for quality and consistency.
