Seven Pilbara-based projects have secured nearly $1.1 million under the latest round of the Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program, aimed at fostering business resilience and economic diversification in the region.
The funding, part of the Cook Government’s ten-year, $55.85 million initiative, is designed to support locally-driven projects that stimulate regional economic growth, the government said in a news release.
Regional Development Minister Don Punch announced the recipients at Lo’s Café and Dining in Karratha, one of the successful grant beneficiaries.
The café received $110,000 to expand its facilities and invest in new equipment.
The upgrade will address hospitality gaps in the region, create entry-level jobs, and offer training opportunities in partnership with two local Aboriginal corporations.
“I’m delighted to announce the latest RED Grants, reflecting our commitment to Pilbara’s economic diversity and job creation,” said Punch.
He added, “Since the inception of this program, the WA Labor Government has invested more than $5.5 million across 49 locally-driven projects in the Pilbara, helping to build a better region for the local community”
Among the other recipients is the Ngarliyarndu Bindirri Aboriginal Corporation, awarded $191,708 to develop social innovation programs for Aboriginal youth aged 16 to 18.
These community-led initiatives will create employment pathways under the guidance of local Aboriginal Elders.
“With a record $10 million on offer for Round 7 ‘Mega REDs’, we are fostering regional development that is making meaningful change, creating real jobs and diversifying regional economies,” Punch noted.
Another key recipient is Pardoo Beef Corporation, receiving $125,000 to transform its station lodging into a high-end multi-purpose accommodation and dining destination, promoting industry expansion and regional tourism.
Karratha Signs, an Indigenous-owned business, secured $250,000 to expand its workshop at the Karratha Industrial Estate.
The grant will enable increased productivity, workspace enhancements, and additional storage capacity.
Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel praised the impact of the program, stating, “These grants represent a significant step forward for the Pilbara, and I am proud to see the positive outcomes they will generate. The diverse range of projects reflects the meaningful work happening across the region.”
Martuku Watkamutiku Pty Ltd received $150,000 to install a new office at its Wedgefield premises, supporting employment and training opportunities for Martu people.
Pilbara Ecological, an environmental business, was awarded $78,455 to purchase specialist equipment and install a cool room, enabling it to store native seeds and meet the growing demand for land restoration efforts.
Pilbara Dive and Tours received $165,361 to purchase a vessel, expanding its dive tour experiences and creating new employment opportunities.
The project will allow tourists to explore the Dampier Archipelago, renowned as the most biodiverse marine environment in Western Australia.
Michel added, “Congratulations to all the successful Round 7 RED grant recipients this year. The diverse range of projects reflects the impactful work happening across the region.”
