The New South Wales government has opened applications for a $1.5 million grant program aimed at assisting businesses in planning their transition to net zero emissions.

The Net Zero Planning Grant offers up to $30,000 per business to cover a portion of project costs associated with emissions reduction planning.

The initiative is part of the broader $22 million Business Decarbonisation Program, designed to support businesses in adopting low-cost improvements and accelerating their transition to net zero.

The grant is structured in two stages: an initial $4,000 to engage expert advisors for assessing key actions, followed by up to $26,000 for detailed work on prioritised strategies.

Projects eligible for funding include the development of greenhouse gas inventories, stakeholder engagement plans, and net zero action plans or targets.

Businesses receiving the grant will also have access to the Net Zero Business Guide, developed after a pilot program involving more than 50 organisations.

NSW has legislated ambitious emissions reduction targets, aiming for a 50 per cent cut from 2005 levels by 2030, 70 per cent by 2035, and net zero by 2050.

The government has framed the grant as part of a broader effort to support businesses in navigating the complexities of emissions reduction while enhancing their global competitiveness.

DCCEEW Director of Program and Market Development, Terry Niemeier, acknowledged the challenges businesses face in transitioning to net zero but emphasised the opportunities for growth and innovation.

“We understand that transitioning to a net zero future can be complex for businesses to navigate,” Niemeier said.

“This grant empowers businesses to turn their plans into a reality—whether it’s setting a net zero target, developing a greenhouse gas inventory, or formulating a net zero action plan.”

Applications for the first round of funding are now open.

Businesses can check their eligibility and apply through the NSW Climate and Energy Action website.
