The University of Adelaide on Monday launched a new sustainability institute that would coordinate efforts toward achieving net-zero emission goals.

The Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Resources (ISER) will serve as the brand champion of the university’s sustainability research initiatives and as the key portal of research capabilities within sustainability, energy and resources, according to Professor Michael Goodsite, director of the new institute.

“There isn’t one answer to achieving a sustainable future. We’re going to have to bring together and integrate expertise and innovation in every facet of our activity,” Goodsite said in a statement.

In a press release issued by the university, ISER will build on the existing research conducted by the university’s institutes and faculties, as well as the Environment Institute

“We have to solve problems like finding enough copper for the clean-energy technology required to reach net-zero carbon emissions, without further damaging what we are trying to protect,” Goodsite added.

The new institute will also help coordinate the University’s forthcoming FAME Sustainability Research Strategy and will lead large-scale collaborative research efforts across the academy ecosystem.

South Australia is one of the significant sources of critical minerals and the sustainable use of these resources is important to net–zero emission initiatives, the University of Adelaide said in its statement.

ISER is located at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus and will also involve researchers at the university’s Waite and Roseworthy campuses.

“Achieving our net-zero targets needs the best ideas and solutions from many fields to drive the innovation and technology required to meet a tough challenge,” said Professor Caroline McMillen, chief scientist for South Australia.
