Mondelez International has announced an investment of approximately 65 million Swiss francs in its Toblerone manufacturing facility located in Bern, Switzerland.

This investment aims to enhance the production capacity of the iconic chocolate brand, with a new state-of-the-art production line set to begin operations in autumn 2025, the company said in a news release.

According to Mondelez, the investment underscores its commitment to the location where the Toblerone brand was originally founded in 1908 and where nearly 90 percent of the brand’s global production takes place today.

The new line will help meet the growing demand for premium chocolate, a segment that is central to Mondelez’s expansion strategy.

Additionally, the company plans to upgrade the facility’s chocolate and nougat production capabilities, as well as improve infrastructure and logistics at the site.

With these upgrades, Bern will be designated as a “Center of Excellence” for Toblerone, serving as a global hub for the brand and its expertise in chocolate production.

The company said this is one of the largest investments in Mondelez’s European chocolate production network in the past decade.

Iain Livingston, President of Toblerone & World Travel Retail, emphasised the importance of the Bern facility to the brand’s global ambitions.

“Toblerone is one of the most famous chocolate brands in the world with tremendous potential,” said Livingston.

“Our center of excellence in Switzerland, from where we proudly bring our brand and chocolate expertise around the world, is key to the brand’s growth ambition to win in the premium segment.”

Tim Spickenbaum, Director of the production facility in Bern, noted the longstanding history of the plant, which has been a cornerstone of Toblerone production for decades.

“Already today, we manufacture on average 4 million Toblerone products per production day. We are therefore delighted about the planned modernizations and investments, which will not only enhance our manufacturing capacity but also solidify Bern’s position as the home and heart of the triangular brand icon.”

According to Mondelez, the investment reflects its broader goal to become the number one player in the global chocolate market by 2030.

As part of this strategy, the Swiss flag will soon appear on Toblerone packaging to highlight the country of origin for the brand, further reinforcing its Swiss heritage.
