The Queensland Government is taking a significant step to support Queensland manufacturers with the launch of a new grant round aimed at boosting energy efficiency.
This initiative provides an opportunity for businesses to install energy-efficient equipment and systems, reducing input costs and enhancing sustainability, the government said in a media statement.
“Our government is committed to future-proofing Queensland’s manufacturing industry and supporting them to be more competitive in a low-carbon future. Round 2 of MEEG is now open, offering manufacturers the opportunity for even more support to reduce their energy use and costs,” said Minister for Manufacturing Glenn Butcher.
He continued, “Manufacturers provided us with feedback during round 1 that support for lighting projects was a priority because these projects deliver real change to business emissions and energy bills almost immediately. So we have listened and thanks to round 2, will deliver more of this important support for our Queensland manufacturers.”
This new funding round builds upon the government’s strong track record, having already delivered over $240 million in grants and support to the manufacturing sector.
With grants of up to $50,000 available, the program will cover 100 per cent of eligible lighting projects and 75 per cent of other eligible projects, marking an increase from the previous round.
The aim is to help manufacturers across Queensland adopt energy-efficient practices and equipment.
Eligible businesses are encouraged to apply for Round 2 of the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Grant (MEEG), which opens on 27 August 2024 and closes on 30 June 2025 or once funding is fully allocated.
Bradco, a joinery manufacturer based in Clontarf, has already reaped the benefits of this support. By replacing over 300 lights with energy-efficient LEDs under Round 1, Bradco expects to save more than $19,000 annually on electricity bills.
AZTEC Security Screens in Cairns is another success story. With a grant of over $14,000 from Round 1, the company replaced their petrol-gas forklift with a new electric model, resulting in significant savings and reduced emissions.
“Queensland Government funding has been vital in helping our family-run business to leverage the opportunities presented by modern, more energy efficient equipment and grow the sustainability of our operations,” said AZTEC Security Screens Director, Cliff Bailey.
He added, “This next round of the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Grant program means more local manufacturers, just like us, can do the same.”
Minister and Member for Cairns, Michael Healy, expressed pride in the government’s achievements. “I’m so proud of the Miles Government’s manufacturing record in Cairns; with our funding support for manufacturers making a world of difference for local businesses.”
