A locally built high-performance catamaran is placing the Sunshine Coast’s boat-building industry on the global map, following the launch of the first Cure 55 production model, crafted entirely at Cure Marine’s facility in Coolum Beach.
Constructed using advanced carbon fibre and 3D printing technologies, the lightweight sailing vessel, named Miyu, is the result of a collaboration between Cure Marine’s skilled team and Australian naval architect Paul Bury.
The vessel will depart from Mooloolaba to its new owners on the Gold Coast before making its international debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May, the council said in a news release.
Cure Marine is currently building five Cure 55 catamarans, with confirmed orders from Australia, Europe, and the United States.
The company’s latest launch follows the introduction of its ‘Cure Custom 70’ in 2023, the largest sailing vessel it has produced to date.
The Sunshine Coast Council said it has supported Cure Marine since its establishment in 2017, providing assistance through town planning, development assessment, and export support.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the company was contributing significantly to positioning the region as a centre for high-tech manufacturing.
“Congratulations to the entire team at Cure Marine for delivering to the world this exemplary high-performance vessel,” Mayor Natoli said.
“We’re proud to see Sunshine Coast businesses like Cure Marine leading the way in high-tech manufacturing and global innovation.”
The company’s Coolum Beach facility, which opened in 2022, is projected to generate an economic impact of more than $63 million for the region and create around 215 direct and indirect jobs.
Cure Marine co-founder Dave Biggar said the project marked a milestone for the local industry.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to push the industry forward and to create a world-class product during the development and manufacture of this boat,” Biggar said.
He also credited Sunshine Coast Council’s Investment Attraction team for supporting the company’s growth.
The vessel’s name, Miyu, meaning “beautiful moon,” was chosen by its Gold Coast owners to reflect both the elegance of sailing and their shared passion for maritime adventure.
