House of Representatives launches inquiry into future of F&B manufacturing industry

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Industry, Science, and Resources has initiated an inquiry to explore avenues for innovation and expansion within Australia’s food and beverage manufacturing sector.

Acknowledging the significance of food manufacturing as the largest segment within Australia’s manufacturing industry, employing over 20 per cent of the workforce, the Committee aims to harness opportunities for growth and advancement, the Parliament of Australia said in a news release.

Chairing the Committee, Rob Mitchell underscored the juncture at which the food industry finds itself, teeming with prospects and challenges alike.

“Australian scientists and food manufacturers are making inroads into high-tech emerging sectors and developing new high value-added products built on our world-class agricultural sector,” remarked Mitchell.

“They are adopting process innovations to make traditional food and beverages tastier, safer, cleaner and more productive,” he added.

Furthermore, Mitchell highlighted the sector’s strides towards sustainability, including efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based heat sources, minimise water consumption and waste, and devise eco-friendly packaging solutions to combat plastic pollution.

The inquiry aims to scrutinise the current landscape of innovation within the industry, delving into advancements in post-farmgate manufacturing technologies, packaging innovations, and prospects for expansion into new product markets.

Additionally, it seeks to grasp the evolving consumer preferences, and the role of research institutions, and anticipate future workforce demands.

“We want to hear from large and small manufacturers about their experiences, hopes and fears for the future – whether you’re a Food and Drink Business top-10 firm, a third-generation family business, or in the start-up or venture capital sectors,” emphasised Mitchell.

“We are also looking for the views of experts in food science, process engineering and packaging.”

Mitchell extended an invitation for written submissions addressing the inquiry’s terms of reference by 1 May 2024.
