Media Release by University of Southern Queensland
University of Southern Queensland manufacturing researchers are at the cutting edge of their field and have just been awarded funds to take their work to the next level.
Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer Ms Judi Zielke PSM yesterday (November 16) announced more than $39 million under the Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) scheme.
The suite includes $495,500 for an advanced materials project led by the University of Southern Queensland’s Professor Hao Wang and Professor John Bell.
Ms Zielke said the LIEF Scheme provided funding for key equipment and infrastructure that allowed researchers to undertake excellent basic and applied research and training.
“This funding ensures Australian scientists have access to world-class infrastructure to support their cutting-edge research across a wide range of disciplines,” Ms Zielke said.
Professor Hao Wang, along with colleagues from UniSQ, Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), will use the funds to acquire an environmental scanning electron microscope for high-temperature analysis.
“This new, state-of-the-art equipment is a technological leap in the field of analysing complex advanced materials. It will enable us to address questions related to how materials are structured and how well they perform under service certain conditions,” Professor Wang said.
“As a result of the project, we expect to improve manufacturing processes of materials, develop new and innovative advanced materials, including polymers, semiconductors, membranes, composites, and energy materials, as well as fostering national collaboration and global stewardship of Australian science and technology.”
The project team included Professor Wang, Professor John Bell, Professor Pingan Song, Dr Venkata Chevali and Associate Professor Polly Burey from the University of Southern Queensland, as well as Professor Yuantong Gu (QUT), Professor Ziqi Sun (QUT), Professor Nunzio Motta (QUT), Professor Nam-Trung Nguyen (Griffith) and Associate Professor Wayne Hall (Griffith).
Also successful in the recent LIEF announcement, University of Southern Queensland Mechanical Engineering researcher Dr Toan Dinh is part of a QUT-led team that was awarded $586,779 in funding. This project will deliver a versatile physical property measurement system capable of automated, precision measurement of electron/phonon transport properties across super-low-temperature, high-magnetic field and high-pressures.
