Helios Project, the developer behind the groundbreaking Helios Cycle, announced a partnership with BlueScopeX, a subsidiary of global steel manufacturer BlueScope Steel.
The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate Helios Green Iron (HGI) into BlueScope’s steelmaking processes.
The initial phase of this collaboration will commence with a pilot project scheduled to begin in 2026, Helios said in media release.
During this phase, Helios will supply HGI produced through its proprietary technology, which utilises sodium as a reducing agent to produce iron and other metals with minimal energy use and zero direct carbon emissions.
Jonathan Geifman, CEO and co-founder of Helios Project Ltd., expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are excited to partner with BlueScopeX to demonstrate the use of Helios Green Iron in their steelmaking operations.
He continued, “This collaboration represents a significant milestone for our development and hints at the future of the global steel industry, with the adoption of new emerging sustainable innovations like the Helios Cycle.”
Andrew Garey, chief executive of BlueScope’s venture fund, BlueScopeX, echoed this sentiment, noting, “Decarbonizing the steel industry is an incredible challenge, and we are thrilled to collaborate with companies like Helios that could support us on our journey.”
Founded in 2018, Helios Project Ltd. initially focused on space technology, specifically the extraction of oxygen from the moon.
The company has since redirected its efforts to developing the Helios Cycle, a novel technology that uses sodium to produce iron from iron ore and other metals while emitting only oxygen.
According to Helios, this innovation is poised to play a crucial role in the steel industry’s decarbonisation efforts by enabling cost-effective green iron production from various types of iron ores, including low-grade ores and tailings.
