Science Minister Karen Andrews has announced the opening of applications for a new, $2 million Government initiative aimed at opening up paths for young Australians to get involved in practical projects in the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In making the announcement, Science Minister Karen Andrews said the Maker Projects: Community STEM Engagement Grants are part of the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme and support STEM-related organisations and businesses to partner with other businesses, experts, schools and community organisations to deliver STEM initiatives.

“It is so important to foster creativity and hands-on learning in our young people and get them interested in the wonders of STEM from an early age,” Minister Andrews said.

“The Government wants to make STEM-related activities and events accessible to all young Australians.

“Competitive grants from $20,000 up to $100,000 for up to two years are on offer to organisations to deliver maker projects with a wide reach and big impact.”

She said applications close at 5pm AEDT on 19 February 2020.

“These grants enable Australians under 18 years of age to get hands on and experiment, tinker and design in the areas of science, technology and innovation,” the Minister continued.

“We are looking for innovative and collaborative projects that will engage young Australians and provide them with the confidence and critical STEM skills they will need for the jobs of the future.”
