Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) said it has made initial Graphene Aluminium-Ion (G+AI) Battery prototype pouch cells with a storage capacity of over 500 mAh, with a nominal voltage of approximately 2 volts.

The update marks significant progress in the G+AI Battery technology being developed by GMG and the University of Queensland as part of the transition from coin cells to pouch cell format.

In a media release, GMG said the latest development shows that the company has matured the battery electro-chemistry and assembly techniques of producing pouch cells with over 10 layers of graphene-coated cathode and aluminium foil anode.

The company said it will now optimise the assembly techniques of the pouch cell prototypes in a bid to achieve a repeatable storage capacity of over 500 mAh cells and conduct a variety of standard testing conditions for comparative purposes.

GMG also announced plans to manufacture cells with over 20 double-layers in order to achieve a storage capacity of 1000 mAh by using an automatic coating machine, cathode laser cutting equipment, and a semi-automatic stacker. This will enable the company to achieve reproducible cells for validation trials.

The reproducible cell production is aligned with an objective of the Rio Tinto Joint Development Agreement, which aims to set a repeatable capacity of 1000 mAH by the first half of 2024 and then produce the pouch cell at scale by the first half of 2025.

GMG said it continues to identify a broad range of applications for a completed GMG G+AI Battery.

According to GMG, several companies from across the globe have confidentially expressed their interest in collaborating on a range of vertical sectors, such as diesel engine replacement, energy storage, personal electronics, aviation, and electric vehicles.
