Energy Networks Australia has today released a factsheet on the value of electricity.

Titled “$1 of electricity gets me…”, the factsheet compares how long, on average, you can run different types of everyday household appliances.

It highlights that $1 of electricity can get you:

  • 20 hours of running a ceiling fan
  • 5 front loader or 3 top loader washing cycles
  • 160 slices of toast
  • 2-3 days of running your refrigerator
  • 550 hours of LED lighting

Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive Officer of Energy Networks Australia, said the factsheet would help give customers more understanding of the relative cost of everyday appliances and how their energy use may impact the grid at peak times.

“We want customers to be more aware of their energy use to give them more control,” Mr Dillon said.

“The type of appliance you use and how you use it can have a significant impact on your power bills and the demand you place on the energy grid.

“For example, a fan can use as much as one-tenth the electricity of a split system air-conditioner and running an air-conditioner at 24-degrees consumes much less power than lower temperatures.

“If you have solar panels, think about running your dishwasher, pool pump or washing machine in the middle of the day rather than when you get home.”

Mr Dillon said some energy networks were running trials to pay customers to lower their energy use at peak times.

“During peak demand times when supply is tight, avoiding running a load of laundry or using your clothes dryer can make a difference,” he said.

The Energy Consumers Australia 2019 Consumer Sentiment Report survey of customers found satisfaction with the value for money of electricity has increased in all states and territories.
