The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has highlighted the urgent need for reliable and clean energy that will come from the Marinus Link energy project.
In its 2022 Integrated System Plan (ISP), AEMO said the critical energy project will generate over $4.5 billion in net benefits for Australia, establishing Tasmania’s position as a clean, smart, and innovative state.
The energy facility is expected to enhance access to the state’s renewable energy resources, including deep storage hydropower and wind energy. The improved access will help boost energy system reliability and lower future prices.
According to AEMO, Marinus Link is critical to kickstarting the Battery of the Nation pumped hydro development and complementary to the state’s Green Hydrogen Vision.
The critical energy project will also create new renewable industries and green manufacturing for Tasmanian businesses for decades to come. The ISP predicts that billions of dollars will be invested in regional areas of Tasmania, opening 1400 jobs and contributing more than $7 million in additional economic activity to the state.
The Tasmanian government is working closely with the Australian government to advance the project’s development and is currently negotiating the Rewiring the Nation policy and its opportunities for Marinus Link.
