A collaborative effort between the Queensland Government, the Uniting Church in Australia Property Trust, and renowned builder Oly Homes has brought eight modular homes and Gold LHA (Livable Housing Australia) accessible units to Thursday Island.

The project, aimed at addressing housing challenges in the remote Far North Queensland community, comprises three two-bedroom homes, three studio units, two accessible units, and a residence for the local Minister.

The modular homes were constructed in South East Queensland and transported to Thursday Island, marking a significant logistical feat, Oly Homes said in a media release.

Steven Nousala, general manager of Oly Homes, described the venture as the most logistically challenging in the company’s 50-year history.

“We are so thrilled to have delivered this project on time and within budget for the people of Thursday Island,” said Nousala.

He added, “We know housing supply and affordability is a major issue within the community and modular homes provide a great solution as land supply and construction costs make the delivery of new homes more challenging,”

The homes were designed with the local climate and cultural needs in mind, incorporating features such as turfing, fencing, and driveways for a polished finish.

Nousala highlighted the dedication of the project team, which achieved completion in just eight months—a timeline shorter than the typical two-year expectation for such initiatives.

Rev Bruce Moore, moderator of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod, underscored the importance of delivering affordable housing for families on Thursday Island.

“The Thursday Island community is remarkable, and their commitment and partnership were vital to this project,” said Rev Moore.

He emphasised the necessity of collaboration among the Queensland Government, the local community, and private enterprise in achieving success in remote areas.

“These homes are incredible and built specifically for our community’s needs and the quality finishes provide a homely welcome for each of the tenants,” Rev Moore added.
