Melbourne-based MOTUM Simulation has unveiled MOTUM World, a cutting-edge, fully customisable simulation software designed for driver training in the mining industry.
Launched at IMARC 2024, this software aims to transform the way drivers are trained by simulating highly specific environments, machinery, and mine-site conditions.
Initially launched in partnership with Alkane Resources—a gold mining company operating in New South Wales—MOTUM World replicates the controls of the Epiroc MT65 Underground Mining Truck, creating a realistic, full-motion training experience for drivers.
The platform allows instructors to simulate a wide variety of scenarios and conditions, from emergency procedures to complex maneuvers, enhancing the safety and skill development of drivers.
“We completed a worldwide search looking for software titles – we tried a number of them, and none had the fidelity, adaptability, flexibility and scalability that could match the quality of our hardware offering,” explained Steve Hoinville, MOTUM Simulation’s managing director.
Instructors can also customise scenarios to test drivers’ responsiveness under various conditions, providing a tailored and challenging training experience.
For Alkane Resources, MOTUM World provides a safer training method by removing the need to use operational vehicles for training.
“The big advantages for us are, number one, we can get people familiar without actually driving that truck in the underground environment, which reduces the likelihood of damage or incidents,” said Nic Earner, managing director of Alkane Resources.
“Number two, it lets us actually put scenarios that truck drivers wouldn’t normally see unless something goes wrong – whether it is reversing in tight spaces, simulating a fire or similar.
The software is available as a standalone package or in combination with MOTUM’s True Motion Simulator, which can replicate a range of vehicles, from heavy machinery to helicopters.
The system supports VR headsets, screens, or a hybrid setup, making it adaptable for various training environments.
