South Australian packaging solutions company Detpak has unveiled what it claims as the country’s largest range of commercially compostable and recyclable PBS-lined packaging, including more than 20 products such as cartons, trays, and lunchboxes.

This launch aligns with new legislation aimed at reducing single-use plastics, which took effect yesterday, 1 September, in South Australia and Western Australia, the company said in a media release.

According to Detpak, the PBS (Polybutylene Succinate) polymer used in the packaging is a blend of renewable plant-based materials and fossil fuel components.

PBS linings are applied to materials to create a robust barrier, making them suitable for various uses, including cartons and cups that require strong barrier performance.

Detpak’s new PBS range is unique in that it meets both kerbside recyclability and commercial composting standards, compliant with both Australian and European certifications.

This launch coincides with legislative changes that now prohibit certain single-use plastics, including plastic plates and bowls, in South Australia and Western Australia.

Detpak’s new PBS packaging offers a viable alternative to these banned items.

Over the past 18 months, Detpak has collaborated closely with key food service clients, including Nando’s, to develop and test the PBS packaging in preparation for the legislative changes in the two states.

Keith Bishop, Detmold Group General Manager of Product and Brand, emphasised the importance of sustainable packaging options.

“As sustainability becomes not just important, but essential, we’re working to reduce single-use plastics by increasing the number of recyclable and compostable packaging options for the takeaway food service market. The more sustainable choices we provide for businesses and consumers, the easier it will be to change habits within our wider community,” said Bishop.

“The more packaging we can re-use, recycle, or compost, the more we can help protect the environment.”

The new range includes a variety of products, such as hot food boxes, pail packs, lunch boxes with windows, and food trays.

The range contains no added PFAS and complies with all Australian state-based plastic legislation.

The PBS cartons are certified for commercial composting under European standards (EN 13432) and are currently pending certification as Industrially Compostable to Australian Standards (AS 4736).

They are also recyclable and undergoing assessment by the ARL for the Australian Kerbside Recyclable Logo.

Detpak’s PBS packaging is now available for order, with custom-printed versions offered, subject to minimum order quantities.
