UGL, a member of the CIMIC Group, has secured a contract from Neoen, a client with whom it has a longstanding relationship, to build and set up the 341 MW / 1363 MWh Collie Battery Stage 2 in Western Australia.
The Stage 2 Collie Battery builds on the 219 MW / 877 MWh Stage 1 currently being installed by UGL, which is slated to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2024, the company said in a news release.
UGL’s scope of work includes site preparation, installation, and connection of 348 Tesla Megapack 2 XL units.
This encompasses the deployment of high-voltage infrastructure, control and switchroom facilities, safety protocols, earthworks, and footings, followed by the installation and connection of the Tesla Megapack 2 XL units, alongside testing and commissioning support.
Juan Santamaria, CIMIC Group executive chairman, underscored the critical role of battery energy storage systems in bolstering Australia’s energy security while aligning with the nation’s net-zero aspirations and sustained growth trajectory.
He emphasised, “UGL has a portfolio of 19 completed and current major renewables generation and storage projects, and we are pleased to apply this experience at the Collie Battery. Projects in high-tech, energy transition and sustainable infrastructure are a key focus for our Group.”
Doug Moss, UGL managing director, highlighted the company’s leadership in the Australian energy sector, particularly in the design, construction, and commissioning of energy assets nationwide.
“We play an important role in Australia’s energy transition through the construction of renewable energy assets and their connection to the grid. Collie Battery Stage 2 will be UGL’s seventh battery installation,” he remarked.
Moss further expressed UGL’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Neoen and Tesla, noting their collaboration on previous battery installations, including the Victorian Big Battery, Western Downs Battery, and Collie Stage 1.
Work on Collie Battery Stage 2 commenced in April 2024 and is slated for completion by late 2025.
