The Australian Made Campaign Ltd (AMCL) has welcomed the federal government’s Buy Australian Plan, which is outlined in the 2025 Federal Budget and aims to boost support for local manufacturers and producers.
The plan includes a $20 million commitment over three years to enhance AMCL’s promotional activities, encouraging Australians to purchase more locally made products.
According to AMCL, more than 90 per cent of Australians already express a preference for Australian-made goods, and this funding will help raise awareness of the Australian Made logo while assisting more manufacturers in obtaining certification.
Additionally, AMCL will receive a $5 million allocation over three years to strengthen the promotion and protection of the Australian Made logo in key export markets.
The government’s broader strategy also incorporates procurement policies that prioritise domestic businesses, an initiative welcomed by AMCL as a step towards strengthening local manufacturing.
Australian Made Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro described the Buy Australian Plan as a significant boost for the sector.
“This level of support for Australian Made is unprecedented, and we look forward to contributing to a strengthened Australian manufacturing sector that not only creates high-quality products but creates new jobs and economic activity,” Lazzaro said.
“It’s important that we value our manufacturing sector and foster an environment that encourages and assists manufacturers to innovate and build on their success while providing pathways to new markets.”
The initiative comes amid ongoing trade uncertainties and challenges in market access, which have underscored the importance of bolstering Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capability.
“A strategic approach to ‘buy local’ initiatives, incorporating consumers, businesses, and all levels of government, is paramount,” Lazzaro added.
“The Buy Australian Plan will provide much-needed support for Australian manufacturers and help bolster the local economy.”
Currently, around 4,500 businesses are licensed to use the Australian Made logo across a diverse range of products.
These businesses support approximately 40,000 jobs and generate an estimated $8 billion in annual revenue, according to AMCL.
Lazzaro emphasised the significance of reinvesting in local industry through sustainable purchasing policies.
“Reinvesting in local industry and local jobs through sustainable purchasing policies that prioritise genuine Aussie products for significant projects, supply contracts, and everyday consumables is one that will ultimately benefit all Australians,” he said.
