Australian semiconductor company BluGlass Limited has secured a repeat order valued at AUD 120,000 for its semi-custom Gallium Nitride (GaN) laser diode bar products from the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL) at the University of Central Florida.
The order follows demonstrations of BluGlass’ technology in enhancing performance for Coherent Beam Combining (CBC) arrays, the company said in a media release.
BluGlass’ GaN laser bars have been shown to improve coherence and phase locking in high-power blue laser arrays, according to the company.
The CBC configuration enables the combination of multiple broad linewidth multi-mode lasers into a single high-power, narrow linewidth coherent beam.
This advancement is expected to enhance applications in underwater and aviation LiDAR systems, space research and communications, and quantum sensing technologies.
According to Bluglass, the repeat order underscores the growing demand for BluGlass’ laser technology in emerging high-tech industries.
The company stated that its lasers offer superior beam quality, phase stability, and narrow linewidths compared to commercially available alternatives.
These attributes are considered crucial for defence and quantum applications that require precise and stable laser performance.
BluGlass CEO Jim Haden highlighted the significance of the order, stating that the performance advantages of its GaN lasers position the company for further growth.
“This repeat order validates the exceptional performance of our custom GaN laser technology, demonstrating our ability to help customers solve critical challenges and pioneer next-generation visible laser applications,” Haden said.
He also noted that high-power coherent GaN lasers have the potential to transform defence and dual-use capabilities, including secure underwater communications, atmospheric LiDAR for clear-air turbulence monitoring, and countermeasure systems designed to disrupt enemy optics.
The company indicated that it intends to strengthen its collaboration with CREOL to advance defence applications requiring precise laser coherence and stability.
BluGlass sees this partnership as an opportunity to expand the adoption of its technology in mission-critical applications.
