Global defence company Babcock has officially launched a new $3.5 million International Engineering and Technology Hub in Melbourne, bolstering its global research and development efforts.
Located in Abbotsford, the state-of-the-art facility is designed to support cutting-edge advancements in areas such as systems engineering, secure communications, autonomy, artificial intelligence, and digitally-enabled asset management.
The hub also includes specialist laboratories and security-accredited testing facilities capable of simulating, modelling, and validating new technologies for swift deployment.
Babcock stated that the facility has been developed with future defence needs in mind, strategically positioning itself to harness Victoria’s robust supply chain network, renowned academic institutions, and skilled engineering workforce.
The hub is expected to generate up to 100 new highly skilled jobs over the next three years, with partial funding provided by the Victorian Government.
The launch follows a period of rapid growth for Babcock in Australia.
Since 2019, the company’s defence workforce in Melbourne has increased seven-fold, reflecting its deepening engagement with the nation’s defence sector.
