The Australian Steel Institute (ASI) has begun accepting applications for its Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) certification program, a regulatory initiative that ensures steelwork providers deliver sustainably produced products sourced through ethical supply chains.

The certification program is a key step towards establishing a new Australian certification program for steel businesses, ASI said in a press release on Thursday.

SSA, which replaces ASI’s former Environmental Sustainability Charter, is a recognised initiative under the Green Building Council of Australia and Responsible Products Framework and Green Star rating system.

SSA’s tiered certification model allows steel businesses to gain “good or best pratice” product recognition for their steel products in the Green Star Buildings rating tool.

The certification program paves a pathway for steel businesses to operate more responsibly and transparently, said Jerusha Beresford, ASI’s sustainability manager.

It also supports sustainable outcomes in the construction industry, including progressing the circular economy and reducing embodied carbon.

ASI is the peak body representing the Australian steel industry, providing marketing, education, advocacy, sustainability, and technical leadership for 500 companies and 5,000 members.
