Austal will construct two additional Independence class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS’s) for the US Navy under a contract announced on Wednesday.

The $A1.6 billion contract will see Austal construct the two 127m frigate-sized vessels at its purpose built shipyard based in Mobile, Alabama USA.

The two ships will be the sixteenth and seventeenth in the class, with Austal having already delivered nine LCS’s to the US Navy to date.

Austal’s CEO, David Singleton said the latest order from US Navy was a tremendous endorsement of the company’s LCS platform and further evidence of the important role Austal plays in building the US Navy.

“We continue hearing positive feedback from the fleet commanders on how well our ships match their mission requirements as they operate globally,” Mr Singleton stated.

“We remain dedicated to building these ships safely, timely and with the quality and craftsmanship that Austal has built our reputation on.”
