Austal announced that its subsidiary, Austal Australasia, has secured a contract to design and construct a 66.8-metre wind-powered aluminium cargo trimaran for Vela Transport of Bayonne, France.

While the exact purchase price remains confidential, it is estimated to be between A$40–$45 million, the company said in an ASX announcement.

The vessel, scheduled for delivery in mid-2026, will be built by Austal Philippines in Balamban, Cebu.

The innovative high-value cargo vessel, based on a concept by VPLP of Paris and equipped with a sailing system by MerConcept, is set to revolutionise maritime transport with its eco-friendly design.

Austal Limited CEO Paddy Gregg highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “Austal is delighted to be partnering with Vela to deliver this unique, sailing cargo trimaran – a striking-looking vessel that will transport high-value goods across the Atlantic Ocean using 100% wind power.”

Gregg emphasised the benefits of the trimaran design, which offers substantial cargo space, flexibility, superior seakeeping, efficiency, and performance.

The shallow draft allows access to secondary ports, enhancing logistical reach to Vela’s customers.

He also pointed out the environmental impact, noting a potential 99 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional container ships.

Since 2007, Austal has designed and constructed 25 large trimarans for commercial and defence purposes worldwide, solidifying its position as a leader in trimaran design and construction. “No other shipbuilder is better placed to deliver this impressive new ship for Vela, and the Austal Philippines team can’t wait to get started,” said Gregg.

Vela Transport CEO Pierre-Arnaud Vallon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are not just constructing a ship with Austal; we are helping to shape the future of international maritime transport. With our strategic shipbuilding partner Austal, we are pioneering the way for an era where ships harness clean and inexhaustible energy.”

Vela’s COO, Pascal Galacteros, acknowledged the technical challenges of constructing the vessel but expressed confidence in Austal’s expertise.

“Austal was selected after a global tender process lasting over nine months. The trust that emerged from our interactions with the Austal teams in Australia and Philippines convinced us that we had the best strategic shipbuilding partner for our project,” he said.
