Risen Energy Australia, a renewable energy project developer, has secured funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency for the development of its Bungama battery energy storage system (BESS) project in South Australia.

The 200 MW/ 400 MWh BESS facility will be situated adjacent to the Bungama Substation near Port Pirie in South Australia.

Archie Chen, CEO of REA, said the funding will enable the company to incorporate advanced inverter functionality that would otherwise not be considered.

“The funding will also enable us to provide the best possible solution for the project and the learnings attained from Bungama will benefit similar BESS projects in our pipeline,”

The new Bungama BESS project is expected to help strengthen SA’s energy network and is slated to house several other large generator or load connections.

The upcoming project, which is currently going through grid connection approval, will be equipped with grid-forming inverter technology with a new integration system. REA said this new system will be successful and offer an additional solution option to the Australian market, which will eventually benefit players in the energy storage industry.

The project is expected to go live by mid to end of 2024. Risen Energy seeks to develop 3GW and deliver 1GW renewable projects by 2027.

“It was a remarkable effort by Risen’s in-house team to progress this project and I am proud of their hard work and team effort,” said Lena Li, head of project development and investment at REA.
