Andersens Flooring is advancing its sustainability efforts by partnering with ResiLoop, which the company claims is Australia’s first product stewardship scheme for floor coverings, to reduce landfill waste and promote a circular economy within the industry.
“As a company that values sustainability, Andersens is excited to be part of this positive initiative,” said Rowan Hodge, CEO of Andersens.
“Through ResiLoop, we can provide our customers with an opportunity to contribute to the future of flooring, aligning with our commitment to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.”
Each year, an estimated 60,000 tonnes of resilient flooring waste ends up in Australian landfills. ResiLoop is addressing this issue by collecting and recycling resilient flooring offcuts, particularly vinyl flooring, that would otherwise be discarded.
These offcuts are gathered during installations and repurposed into new applications, helping to minimise industry waste.
Andersens’ involvement allows its franchisees to offer customers more sustainable flooring choices while reinforcing the company’s leadership in environmentally responsible practices.
“As a ResiLoop member, Andersens is helping customers play a vital role in this initiative,” said Sophi MacMillan, CEO of ResiLoop.
“The funding raised through the levy our members pay supports both our day-to-day operations, including the management of offcut collections for recycling, and our research and development efforts to explore additional opportunities for utilising this valuable material, traditionally considered waste.”
According to ResiLoop, the levy adds a modest cost to the consumer. “If all the floors of the average-sized, new home in Australia were fully covered in ResiLoop Member products, the levy would add just $21 to the cost. Yet it makes a real difference to the scale of recycling we can achieve,” MacMillan added.
The initiative also includes a network of ResiLoop Collection Points, where registered floor layers collect and transport offcuts to ResiLoop’s recycling partner.
The recycled material is then used to create products such as garden edging, now available through a national retailer.
Beyond the ResiLoop partnership, Andersens continues to drive environmental initiatives through Project Green, a program launched in October 2020 that has resulted in the planting of over 390,000 trees.
Under its One Project – One Tree model, each flooring installation contributes to global reforestation efforts, supporting wetlands, mangroves, and bushfire recovery projects across Australia and beyond.
“Incorporating ResiLoop alongside Project Green strengthens our commitment to sustainability at every stage of the flooring lifecycle,” Hodge said.
“From sourcing responsible materials to recycling old flooring and planting trees to offset our impact, Andersens is dedicated to shaping a greener future.”
