For over three decades, Austal has been a leader in Australian shipbuilding, transforming from a small fishing vessel manufacturer into a global force in lightweight, high-performance ship design.
Today, with a workforce of nearly 5,000 across multiple countries, including a strong presence in the US, Austal remains connected to its Australian roots, employing around 1,000 people in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. Central to this innovation is Austal’s enduring relationship with Capral Aluminium, Australia’s largest aluminium supplier.
For over 25 years, Capral has been a vital partner, providing the high-quality materials Austal requires to meet the rigorous demands of shipbuilding. In a LinkedIn post by Capral, the company said this partnership underscores the shared values and strategic alignment between the two firms.
Aluminium: The key to Austal’s success
Aluminium’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant properties have been transformative for Austal’s operations. The material reduces vessel weight to improve fuel efficiency—an advantage for both commercial and defence sectors. Its natural corrosion resistance eliminates the need for extensive coatings, lowering maintenance costs and extending operational lifespans.
Brent Carey, head of Supply Chain at Austal Australia, highlighted aluminium’s advantages:“Aluminium’s lightweight. It’s easy to work with… it’s less likely to corrode… it’s more resilient.”
The complexity of Austal’s aluminium-based ship construction is exemplified in projects like the Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats for the Royal Australian Navy.
Each vessel, requiring around 50,000 individual components, is completed in just 15 months. This intricate process is supported by Austal’s dedicated workforce and Capral’s reliable supply chain.
The role of Capral in Austal’s innovation
Capral supplies Austal with aluminium sheets and complex extrusions, many certified to meet DNV standards—a critical factor in ensuring Austal’s high-quality output. Beyond materials, Capral brings strategic value through open communication and shared values.
“One of the important parts about Capral is our strategic agreement,” said Brent Carey, head of Supply Chain at Austal Australia.
“It’s nice to have a supplier where we can share a vision, share values, and build a mutual relationship that benefits both parties.”
Capral stated its accessibility also enhances the collaboration. Austal maintains direct connections with key Capral team members, allowing challenges to be addressed promptly without compromising production timelines.
A partnership built on shared Values
Austal and Capral’s partnership extends beyond operational efficiency to align with sustainability goals. Aluminium’s recyclability and fuel-saving properties align with Austal’s commitment to sustainable shipbuilding—a value increasingly demanded by global clients.
As Austal expands into steel vessel construction and explores new markets, its partnership with Capral remains a cornerstone of its success.
“It’s about relationships,” said Matt Klingberg, Sales Operations Manager at Austal Australia. “With Capral, we’ve had a great relationship for a long period, and I expect one that will continue.”
Together, Austal and Capral exemplify the potential of Australian manufacturing on the global stage, combining innovation, sustainability, and a shared vision to push the boundaries of what’s possible in modern shipbuilding.
