As National Recycling Week begins, Ego Pharmaceuticals is amplifying its sustainability efforts by transitioning its iconic QV tube products to recyclable packaging, a move set to save approximately 18 tonnes of waste from landfill annually.
This shift supports the week’s focus on recycling and resource recovery, aligning Ego’s operations with broader environmental goals, Ego said in a news release.
The initiative involves replacing traditional laminate packaging, which is unrecyclable in Australia, with low-density polyethylene (LDPE), a material that can be processed by standard kerbside recycling systems.
This change highlights Ego’s commitment to reducing landfill contributions while encouraging consumers to adopt eco-friendly disposal habits.
Simone Thomassen, Ego’s Packaging Projects & Studio Manager, noted the comprehensive planning behind the initiative, explaining, “This project has been two years in the making, involving extensive production and stability trials for key products to ensure the transition maintains the high standards that consumers expect from QV.”
The rollout of LDPE packaging is underway for various QV tube products in Australia, as well as in the Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
The complete transition is expected to conclude over the next 12 months, depending on production schedules.
This sustainable push was made possible through Ego’s partnership with Impact International, an Australian manufacturer with a strong commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
Impact International’s initiatives include a dedicated solar farm, policies against heavy metals, extensive recycling efforts, and a sustainable forest that offsets the raw materials used in their tubes.
With this change, Ego inches closer to its sustainability targets, including a goal set through the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and the Australia New Zealand Pacific Island Plastics Pact (ANZPAC), aiming for 100 per cent reusable or recyclable packaging across its cosmetic products.
