Orora’s Revesby beverage can manufacturing plant has recently celebrated a milestone in sustainable manufacturing, honouring Horst Drechsler, an engineer who has dedicated 45 years to the company.
Drechsler, who joined the plant in 1979 when it operated a single-speed production line, credits Orora’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement as key factors in his enduring tenure.
Reflecting on his career, Drechsler noted the evolution of the plant’s operations and technology, particularly in the production of lightweight cans.
“The team is prepared to work hard for results, and that resonates with me,” Drechsler shared.
“I’ve always appreciated Orora’s innovation – we try to stay ahead of trends in technology and try new things.”
Drechsler, originally from Germany, first learned his trade skills in his homeland before bringing his expertise to Australia.
His role at Orora has allowed him to expand those skills through various engineering responsibilities, which, he said, has kept him motivated.
He encourages new team members to bring their best efforts, noting that Orora “appreciates team members who are keen to apply themselves and learn.”
Chris Smith, executive general manager of Orora Cans, praised Drechsler’s dedication, emphasising its rarity in today’s workforce.
“For 45 years, Horst has been an integral part of our team, which is amazing in itself,” Smith stated.
“He has seen this business through numerous changes, always adapting and sharing his wisdom with his teammates. Horst is one of several long-serving team members at Revesby, which speaks volumes about our workplace culture.”
Orora is Oceania’s largest can manufacturer, with six facilities across Australia and New Zealand, producing infinitely recyclable cans made with approximately 72 per cent recycled content in 2024.
Orora’s diverse offerings now include a range of sizes from the 250ml Slim to the 500ml can.
