Austal USA enhances navy manufacturing capabilities with SPEE3D’s WarpSPEE3D printer

SPEE3D, an industry leader in metal additive manufacturing, announced that Austal USA Advanced Technologies (Austal USA AT) has acquired its WarpSPEE3D printer, aiming to strengthen its role in the US Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence.

This acquisition marks an advancement in Austal USA AT’s dedication to pioneering additive manufacturing solutions for defence and maritime applications, as stated in a news release. 

Austal USA AT, known for its innovative approach to maritime technology, leads the US Navy’s flagship additive manufacturing centre in Danville, Virginia, where it focuses on optimising the construction and sustainment of naval assets. 

The new WarpSPEE3D printer acquisition supports Austal’s commitment to advancing post-delivery support capabilities, not only for the US Navy but also for the US Coast Guard, by streamlining supply chain processes with faster production timelines.

“Cold Spray AM technology has impressive high-deposition rates, which are ideal for creating larger parts, and SPEE3D’s system presents an opportunity to enhance our capabilities in manufacturing traditionally cast components.”

SPEE3D’s Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing (CSAM) technology, proprietary to the company, enables rapid on-demand metal part production with build speeds reaching up to 100 grams per minute. 

The WarpSPEE3D printer supports part construction up to 88 pounds (40 kilograms) and 40 inches by 30 inches in size, compressing production timeframes from weeks to mere hours, which greatly reduces prototyping phases and operational downtime.
