The Queensland Government has awarded Knorr-Bremse a $30 million contract under the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) to supply climate control systems for 65 new six-car passenger trains.
Knorr-Bremse, a prominent player in rail manufacturing, will expand its existing service facility in Darra to meet the requirements of the contract, the government said in a media statement.
In particular, the company will produce 520 climate control units, encompassing mechanical, refrigeration, and electrical assembly.
Minister for Manufacturing Glenn Butcher commented on the environmental and technological benefits of the new systems: “This world leading air filtration technology will provide sterilised air inside the trains and eliminate both airborne and surface bacteria.”
He also emphasised the project’s impact on local employment and regional support: “Under Labor, train manufacturing in Queensland has a proud history and a bright future. Our $9.5 billion Queensland Train Manufacturing Program is delivering opportunities for local businesses and jobs for Queenslanders.”
Member for Inala, Margie Nightingale, highlighted the efficiency and passenger comfort provided by the new systems: “The highly efficient and quiet air conditioning systems will also maintain the train’s internal temperature to ensure a comfortable environment for passengers. The system also includes a smart control which operates the air conditioning system and optimises power consumption efficiency.”
Nightingale also praised the program’s commitment to local business and economic sustainability: “We will leave a lasting legacy by investing in local businesses and delivering assets that contribute to economic prosperity in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
Downer, involved in the project, underscored the importance of local business engagement: “Downer is proud to be delivering the QTMP project, providing multiple opportunities to Queensland-based businesses. We believe that working locally allows us to build important connections so we can all thrive now and into the future,” said Kamal Habibullah, Executive General Manager, Passenger North / QTMP Project Director.
Joe Schembri, director Rail HVAC at Knorr-Bremse, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the role in the program: “Knorr-Bremse is a global market leader in railway products and is excited to have the opportunity to be part of the QTMP, supporting Australian manufacturing.”
The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program is set to support 1,300 jobs throughout its lifecycle.
