Green hydrogen gigafactory opens doors in Queensland’s Gladstone region

Today marks the official opening of a state-of-the-art green energy manufacturing facility in Queensland’s Gladstone region, emphasising the government’s delivery of a Future Made in Australia.

Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic joined Queensland Premier Steven Miles in inaugurating the new Fortescue hydrogen electrolyser advanced facility, the government said in a media release.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the facility boasts a fully automated production line along with several cleanroom robotic assembly cells and lines, enabling the industrial-scale production of green hydrogen.

This pioneering project not only enhances the nation’s manufacturing capabilities but also generates new, well-paid job opportunities, reinforcing the government’s investment in renewable technology.

The government’s support for the project is evident through its investment of $44.9 million in Fortescue Future Industries for the construction of the electrolyser manufacturing facility.

Collaborating with esteemed research institutions such as CSIRO and Central Queensland University, the project epitomises a synergistic partnership between government, industry, and academia.

Minister Ed Husic underscored the significance of the initiative, pointing out its alignment with Australia’s transition to net-zero emissions while concurrently fostering job growth.

He highlighted the pivotal role of regional Queensland in driving this transformation, affirming the government’s commitment to empowering the region’s potential.

“This demonstrates our commitment to a Future Made in Australia, while also helping the country make the transition to net zero,” the minister remarked.

According to Husic, the Hydrogen Gigafactory serves as a testament to the collective achievements possible when government and industry collaborate in pursuit of the nation’s long-term prosperity.
